A Comprehensive Guide to Flattening your garden

A Comprehensive Guide to Flattening your garden

Having a private place to relax in the summer months is a must, but an unappealing space can remove any thoughts of relaxation. If you plan to spend a lot of time in your garden as the weather grows warmer then a garden renovation may be in order.

If your garden is uneven it can be difficult to know what to do with it, or where to start with a renovation. Not only is a garden that isn’t level inconvenient when installing things like sheds or picnic tables, but it can also be unaesthetic.

At Tiger Plant, we understand that levelling your garden can feel like a big task, which is why we have created a comprehensive guide to flattening a lawn so you know the best time and equipment to use for a perfect garden.

Choose the right time to level your garden

Flattening your garden requires time, it’s a process that will probably look worse before it begins to look better as you dig up areas of your lawn.

If you are hoping to get your garden ready for the summer it is best to start the restoration process in the springtime, when any frost has thawed and grass or flowers are actively growing in your garden. Levelling your garden during this time means that newly planted grass seeds will take much faster, and the wetter climate is good for the soil that has just been turned over and flattened.

Steps for Flattening your lawn

Small Levelling projects

There are different steps to follow to effectively flatten your garden. If the levelling is very minor you may be able to correct the issue with a simple layer of topsoil. Just shake your topsoil over the area that needs to be levelled and rake it to the desired level. You can now tamp down and flatten the area, either with your feet and rake or with the use of a Wacker to really compact the soil.

For more intense flattening jobs the process will be different.

Larger ground levelling projects

For especially large garden renovations you may want to use an excavator to take your garden down to the level you need, this will be much quicker than using a shovel and allows you to remove piles of soil easily.

If you are placing turf back down on the area you need to make sure to tamp it down, starting on the outside and working your way in. You can do this with your feet, or using a wacker or roller depending on the size of the area. A wacker uses vibrating plates that are ideal for compacting soil or other materials, creating a solid compact base for any additional garden renovations you may want to do next.

Once this is completed you can use a spirit level to check the area and make sure it’s up to your standards.
